A crowd gathered at the Kimbell Art Museum was told by Director Dr. Eric McCauley Lee to “watch the papers” for a major museum acquisition announcement this coming Friday. The news came while standing in front of Michelangelo’s The Torment of Saint Anthony, a work Lee says in more ordinary economic times would have found a home at the Met in New York. Executed in oil and tempera on a wooden panel, this work is the first painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) to enter an American collection, and one of only four known easel paintings generally believed to come from his hand. Can the coming announcement equal the Michaelangelo purchase? We may be able to figure out what it is. Stay tuned to see. UPDATE: It’s a Guercino. The Kimball Museum is a must see, in-and-of-itself, as an architectural masterpiece. Everything else is just gravy as far as I’m concerned.
I agree. It’s one of the of the best. Especially true if you factor in the building.
